Transport and Logistics Skills That Keep South Africa Working

Transport and logistics employ over one million South Africans, moving goods and people across the continent. Yet inefficiencies in ports, rail, and road systems hamper growth.

In-demand skills include logistics management, supply chain analysis, aviation and maritime operations, and safety compliance. Truck drivers, pilots, and seafarers remain in short supply, alongside transport engineers.

Logistics hubs and infrastructure investments present job creation opportunities for youth. Training programs must prepare workers for digitalised logistics systems, warehouse automation, and green transport technologies.

Retrenchments in rail and road are rising, however, displaced workers can be redeployed into logistics coordination, safety management, and renewable transport initiatives.

Transport keeps the economy moving. Without skilled workers to modernise and sustain logistics, South Africa’s growth will remain constrained. Investing in transport training is investing in the nation’s mobility and competitiveness.
