Tech Skills Defining South Africa’s ICT Sector

The Media, Information, and Communication Technology (MICT) sector is one of the fastest-growing job creators globally and in South Africa, demand far outpaces supply. According to industry data, the country faces a shortage of over 70,000 ICT professionals.

Top in-demand skills include software development, cybersecurity, data science, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital marketing. Qualifications in computer science, information systems, and software engineering are highly sought after. Digital media and content creation also open new pathways, particularly for young creatives.

SMEs and startups are pivotal. They absorb ICT graduates faster than large corporates and often create new employment streams in e-commerce and fintech. However, affordability of training remains a barrier. Scaling up coding bootcamps, online micro-credentials, and public-private partnerships will help close the talent gap.

Traditional media houses continue to shed jobs. Journalists, radio professionals, and editors are being retrenched as advertising revenues decline. These workers can transition into digital communication, content strategy, and online broadcasting with targeted reskilling.

The ICT sector is South Africa’s digital gold rush. Those with the right skills will thrive; those without risk being excluded. Closing the digital divide is essential for inclusive participation in the future economy.
